Expansion on Racial Issues
DesdemonaIn Desdemona's quote she casually calls Othello outside of his name. She had called him "...the Moor". The term Moor is used to label someone who is North African or of North African descent. |
Iago and RoderigoBoth Iago and Roderigo's quotes were of Othello's physical features, something of which he can't help. More specifically, Iago's quote delves into the fear of having a child with Othello, as they compared him to an aggressive animal, and had stated that Brabantio should put a stop to the supposed action of intercourse between Desdemona and Othello before he has black grandchildren, as if this were a bad thing. |
Duke of VeniceAs the Duke thinks he is paying Othello a compliment it is clear that he is unaware that he had said something particularly offensive. He states that Othello is "fair" to him, referring to his complexion, as if there is something wrong with being several shades darker than fair, as if it is undesirable. |
